Controlled mechanical ventilation is an automatic system of replacement air.
CONTROLLED MECHANICAL VENTILATION
This device has many applications in modern buildings that have a good thermal insulation but they can’t permit the correct air circulation.
That is a problem because it may cause:
- Mold growth where there is moisture;
- Presence of stale air;
- Presence of smells.
The CMV, with low energy costs, allows the correct replacement of air without heat loss trough the opening of windows or other leaks.
CMV provides an increase of the energy performance of the building and consequently , its value.
Passiv haus standard is characterised by the presence of this ventilation system, without its presence the house would be a simple low energy house.

Passiv haus institute gives the following definition to a low energy house:
“A Passive House is a building, in which thermal comfort (ISO 7730) can be provided solely by postheating or postcooling of the fresh air flow which is required for good indoor air quality (DIN 1946) – without using recirculated air in addition”.
A passive house is a building that, thanks to innovative techniques, is able to maintain optimum indoor comfort conditions.
The Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) described the passive house as a building with the following properties:
- High thermal insulation;
- Insulate windows with triple high quality glass;
- Mechanical ventilation system with highly efficient heat recovery;
- Air tightness and absence of heat bridges;
- High efficiently lightning.
Passiv Hause standard is applicable to existing buildings or buildings under renovation.
In this case the house will be isolated by thermal coat, normal windows will be chanced with high quality insulated windows and the heating system will be replaced by controlled mechanical ventilation system.
